To fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Kyrö began producing hand sanitizers in March 2020. First, their product was used by institutions critical to society (i.e. hospitals). Later on, they began selling hand sanitizer to consumers. However, the company doesn't turn a profit on this, instead selling it for a reasonable price. Because of the hand sanitizer production and sales, the company managed to avoid layoffs. Napue Gin won world’s best gin for Gin and Tonic

Kalle, a keen home-brewer who had spent his working life developing biofuels out of algae in a university research lab, was a natural choice for Head Distiller. Miika, with his passion for rye whiskey, became the CEO of Kyrö Distillery Company. Miika explains, “It’s a very usual experience here in Finland – the moment when you step out of the sauna in the summer, early in the morning and there’s dew on the grass. The smell and sensations of nature you would get in that moment are what we wanted to put into the gin.” Like many distillers before them, the challenges of cash-flow while whisky matures gave rise to the creation of gin. Experience has taught me that using spirit bases most generally associated with whisky production (like malt) when making gin, does not always create a positive outcome, with most tasting more like genever than anything else. Not going to lie – I’ve never heard of today’s gin. After a bit of research, it turns out Napue Gin is a small batch gin from the Finnish Kyro Distillery Company using rye grain as the base spirit. This gin won the inaugural IWSC Gin & Tonic trophy, so fingers crossed it’s good! (Side note: I was telling boy about this gin and pronouncing it in a variety of ways, then it appeared on Sunday Brunch and is apparently pronounced “Nap-we”. So there we go.) Also on the list is a barrel-aged gin, and they’re constantly experimenting at their German copper still, turning out amazing new ideas under the Study range.So, what’s next for the five best friends who founded Kyrö Distillery Company? They certainly aren’t standing still – in fact, this year the first rye whiskey from the distillery will be unveiled. It’s a moment that all five founders have been waiting for excitedly, but won’t mark the end of enthusiastic experimentation that goes on at their once abandoned dairy.
